Our Heritage

At the origin of Dumoulin d’Herstal stands Henri Dumoulin, founder of the company and father of the dynasty. His name first appears in 1935, when, at the age of 21, he was recruited by Francotte after completing an outstanding and highly demanding training within workshops of the highest calibre. He remained with Francotte for several years, including the period following the Second World War. After a brief tenure at Mahillon, Gunsmith to the King of Belgium, he founded his own company and quickly gained notoriety, particularly for his bolt-action rifles.

His eldest son, Ernest Dumoulin, inherited from his father both a passion for fine gunmaking and a taste for rifled firearms. In 1969, under the name Dumoulin Herstal, Ernest continued his father’s savoir-faire, developing a range of bolt-action rifles and double express rifles unmistakably known for their elegance and exceptional strength. The African-calibre rifles produced by Ernest Dumoulin were machined from solid blocks of forged steel within the company’s own workshops. Since the passing of Ernest Dumoulin in 2008, production was limited to a small number of rifles intended primarily for the American market.

Beginning in January 2026, ninety-one years after the beginning of the adventure launched by Mr. Henri Dumoulin in Belgium, the brand’s ambition is once again to offer its clients firearms entirely built to custom by the finest craftsmen, each a master in his own discipline. These firearms, of unmatched quality, are designed according to the precise specifications of each client. Entirely handmade, the actions, barrels and stocks are machined and crafted in our workshops, drawing upon expertise acquired from the greatest masters of the trade.

This family tradition, built upon the transmission of the finest savoir-faire, has allowed Dumoulin to endure to this day. Because your greatest hunts demand exceptional firearms.
